Some proposals are completely spontaneous. Others are planned down to the smallest detail. And then there are the ones that happen during a moment that already feels special.

That is exactly what happened recently in Guernsey, where Alain proposed to his partner Jade during the eclipse at Lihou headland, a place that already had meaning for them because it was connected to some of their first dates. Jade thought they were simply there to photograph the eclipse, but Alain had been preparing the surprise with photographer Ben Fiore for several days.

And I think that is what makes stories like this so lovely. The proposal does not just create a new memory, it becomes part of a moment that already had its own meaning.

Choosing a moment that already means something

There is something very special about linking a proposal to a date, a place or an event that already matters to you as a couple.

It could be an anniversary, a birthday, a trip you have been looking forward to, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or simply a place that has been important in your relationship from the beginning.

The lovely thing is that afterwards, that moment belongs to your story in a completely different way.

You do not just remember the holiday, the dinner or the celebration. You remember it as the moment you decided to get married.

It does not need to be an eclipse

Of course, an eclipse makes for a pretty spectacular backdrop, but I think the idea behind it is much more interesting than the event itself.

A meaningful proposal does not have to be grand.

It could happen in the restaurant where you had your first date, on a walk you have done together hundreds of times, during a family celebration, or somewhere that would look completely ordinary to everyone else but means everything to the two of you.

Sometimes the most memorable moments are not the biggest ones. They are simply the ones that feel personal.

A memory within a memory

What I really like about choosing a symbolic moment is that it creates a kind of memory within a memory.

You already have a reason to remember that day, and then suddenly it carries something else too.

Years later, Alain and Jade will probably remember the eclipse, but they will also remember where they were standing, what they were feeling and the exact moment their relationship moved into a new chapter.

And I think that is what makes these proposals so special.

The right moment is the one that feels like you

There is no perfect formula for a proposal.

Some people love a big moment. Others would much rather have something quiet and private. Some want a photographer nearby, others want the moment to belong only to the two of them.

But if you are thinking about proposing, there is something quite beautiful about asking yourself whether there is already a date, a place or a moment in your relationship that could make the occasion even more meaningful.

You do not need an eclipse.

You just need something that feels like yours.
